“I woke up one day and realized that my breakfast tasted like nothing.”

Lemon

I tested positive for COVID-19 in the beginning of April. I woke up one day and realized that my breakfast tasted like nothing.

I was confused. I thought maybe I put too much milk in my coffee. Maybe there wasn’t enough butter on my bagel. Then, it suddenly hit me that no sense of taste was a symptom of COVID.

I went to my fridge and put a lemon in my mouth. I couldn’t taste it. I put hot sauce on my tongue and tasted nothing. I sprayed perfume and realized my sense of smell was also gone.

Fortunately, these have been my only symptoms, but it is September now and my taste and smell are still gone. Most foods taste like nothing. What I can taste don’t taste the same as it used to. I can still smell almost nothing. Sometimes if I eat a lemon I can taste for a small period of time.

I’ve now become concerned that my taste and smell may ever come back. I never thought that my taste and smell would still be gone four months after getting COVID.
