“I want to remember the lost and the hurting.”

COVID-19 is a beast. It wreaks havoc on otherwise healthy lungs and makes something as mundane as breathing an impossible feat, sometimes despite the help of a ventilator and drugs.

My heart aches for the patients we have lost. I watch people I once had conversations and made jokes with progressively lose their lungs, kidneys, liver, and even their brain function. Holding a stranger while they take their last breaths in the absence of loved ones feels wrong in so many ways. I mourn too for the families who don't get to say goodbye, or have to do so with a walkie-talkie on the other side of a glass door.

While social media is clogged with fear, anger, and politics over the virus, I want to remember the lost and the hurting. I'm no artist, but I sat in front of a blank canvas today and painted my heart for those who have lost the battle, feeling hopeful, and imagining them finally at rest in heaven with their angel lungs.
